Growing Things and Spring

Hello, hello hello! I am so glad you stopped by today to see what’s happening at LodgePole Quilting. We have a few things going on around here so let’s get busy!

First I want to let you know I do use affiliate links so if you do make a purchase from one of my links, thank you. That small commission I make helps to keep this website going. Secondly, I want to encourage you to sign up for the email. That way you can stay informed as to when I make another post. And then third, be sure to follow me on Instagram. You can find the link at the end of this blog or click here.

My dear husband, Wes, has been very busy outside working on a couple of projects and one of them is for me. He is expanding my garden to give me more room to move around in and add a couple of more raised beds. I am very excited because the babies I have started from seeds are getting ready to be in their new home. I have lots of new baby plants and lots of more seeds to sow.

Start your 7-Day Free Bluprint Trial at myBluprint.com now!

He also bought me some new lily bulbs since the ones I had from a couple of years ago didn’t do so well last year. As soon as the weather straightens out I will get them planted as well.

Did I mention we bought a little peach tree. It already has buds that are opening. But again, we are waiting for the weather to stop being so erratic. Yesterday we had rain, snow, hail, more rain and a sprinkling of sunshine. Crazy. So my garden is indoors until spring gets itself under control.

I want to announce the SEW HOT IRON REST Giveaway winner…. Drum roll please………………

@iquiltalot_fl!

Congratulations! Woohoo! I did mail her the prize, the Sew Hot Iron Rest, so she should be receiving it in a few days.

I love giveaways, entering them myself or holding them. It’s always so much fun. I don’t always win but when I do I just get all giddy inside. How about you? And just the thought that someone has won a giveaway I hold, it just pleases me to no end.

So…… we are going to have another Giveaway! YAY! I told you I LOVE giveaways!

Annie’s Weekend Sewing GIVEAWAY!

This one is Annie’s Weekend Sewing: 30+ Quick and Easy Projects in electronic download (PDF format). I have already made two projects from this great book.

Both projects didn’t take hardly any time. I had some left over batik jelly roll and yardage to make the bag. The potholders were made with Moda Play All Day fat quarters. The quilting was simple line stitching with Aurifil MK-50 2026 (my all purpose piecing and quilting thread.)

Here is a description of this book:

Unleash your sewing imagination! Annie’s Weekend Sewing features 30+ inspiring, quick and easy projects perfect for any room and every occasion.

  • Craving a clutter buster? Our fun Sew Cozies make organizing your sewing room a breeze. Upcycled canning jars are great for storing small sewing supplies, and these cute cozies are the perfect way to decorate them.
  • Ready to bring the sunshine in? Brighten up your kitchen with our stash-busting Summer Fun Mug Rugs. Use your favorite fabric scraps to make this smiling duo in an afternoon.
  • Dinner too hot to handle? Protect your hands and keep your meal hot with our Microwave Cozies. These handy cozies are perfect for heating up a mug of coffee, a bowl of soup or even a serving dish of food, and removing it from the microwave safely and comfortably.

To enter the giveaway just click on the Rafflecopter link and answer all of the questions! By the way, if you have already won this month please allow others an opportunity to win by sitting this one out. Thank you. Oh! I almost forgot to tell you, the giveaway starts tomorrow, April, 17, 2019 and ends April 30, 2019. It ends just in time to make something for Mother’s Day!

Oh Me, Oh My, How Time Flies!

It’s always amazing to me when I see we are approaching the middle of what was a new month. I haven’t decided if it’s because the older I get time seems shorter, or if time really is flying by.

I do know the SEW HOT IRON REST GIVEAWAY is almost over. If you haven’t entered now is the time to do so. The Giveaway ends April 14, 2019 at 12am. I will be announcing the winner on Tuesday April 16, 2019. Click here to enter the giveaway!

I entered a designer fabric challenge through Modern Quilt Guild. They sent me five fat eighths. I was looking at them and thinking, “What am I going to do with these?” The upside of this challenge is I can use additional fabric from the same designer in my challenge. I decided to design a quilt. I’m calling it Star Blossoms.

Accuquilt Dynamic Promo

I have completed the nine star blocks. Five of them are 20.5 inches square including their borders and four of them are 14.5 inches square with their borders.

The designer is Riley Blake. I really like all of their collections and since I had some fat quarters and scraps I was able to use them with the five fat eighths I received. It was definitely a challenge in choosing fabric and which star block to make. I had one block I was going to use this great fabric for and I totally mis-calculated what I needed to cut and wasted two perfect fat quarters. It just about made me sick. However I was able to use some of it in another star block. Whew.

Here are some pictures of the star blocks I made.

I used Riley Blake Designs Simply Happy, Shortcake, Wild Bouquet, Vintage Crayola, Granny Chic Solids, Gingham Small Cotton Yellow and of course, the five fat eighths. I think they came out pretty good. I like star blocks and let me tell you I have tons of quilt designs crowding my mind with all of the various blocks I have found. I need more paper and pencils!

I used the five fat eighths in the Ohio star block, Sawtooth star block, Fractured star block and in Star Struck star block.

Happy Cloud Quilt Batting by Fat Quarter Shop

The background is going to be white, Riley Blake Designs white, of course and the border is a red print and the backing is a blue plaid, again, Riley Blake Designs fabrics. I’m using Aurifil MK-50 2026 (white) thread for all of the piecing. I haven’t decided on the quilting part yet. It just depends on how it comes out once it’s all put together.

I used my Accuquilt Go! Cutting System and various dies to cut these stars. Let me tell you, that is such a time saver. Not to mention how much easier it was to cut half rectangle triangles. No calculating on my part. So thank you Accuquilt! You made cutting block pieces so much easier.

Thankfully I have until the 31st of May to get this all finished. I did get the hard part completed. I will have more pictures later.

Until then, don’t forget to enter the Giveaway. I am going to be having another one in about a week. So be sure to sign up for the emails. You will want to enter this one as well. Oh, I do love giveaways!

One last thing, I am entering several quilts I have made in a quilt show that is being held Saturday, April 13, 2019. My stomach is doing flip-flops. It’s the first time I have ever done anything like this. It’s one thing to give my work to family and friends, but to have my quilts on display for strangers to look at…. well… flip-flops. Thankfully there isn’t any judging on these. Okay, that’s it for now.

Until next time – Spring is here – what’s blooming in your quilting?

I’m So Excited!

It’s time for the great unveiling! The Union Square Quilt has been officially released today! Yay! I am so excited!

Union Square Quilt in Riley Blake Simply Happy and Gingham Small Cotton.
Back of Union Square Quilt made with Riley Blake Simply Happy and Gingham Small Cotton

I had a lot of fun making this quilt. I was able to use my Accuquilt Go! Cutter and my Go! Qube Mix and Match 8 inch Block to cut most of the pieces needed for this quilt block. I saved a lot of time using the cutting system and have accurate cuts.

Accuquilt Dynamic Promo

The fabric I chose for this quilt along is Riley Blake Designs Simply Happy by Dodi Lee Poulsen and Small Cotton Gingham Yellow. The yellow gingham made me very happy while putting the blocks together. I was surrounded by a lot of snow when I was making this quilt. All of the colors and happy prints brought spring into my wintry home.

from: Fat Quarter Shop

The quilting is a very simple line done in a horizontal and vertical 2 inch pattern. It actually compliments the pattern of the quilt. I used Auriful thread MK-50 #2026 (white) for all of the piecing and quilting. I am just going to admit it, Aurifil thread is my favorite thread to use. It’s the first one I reach for when I am piecing and/or quilting.

The wool pressing mat and the Tailor’s Clapper made a huge difference in the pressing of my pieces. Crisp seams and pointing points make a beautiful block.

It’s Here! It’s Time! It’s GIVEAWAY Time!

I LOVE giveaways! I may have mentioned that in my last blog. BUT, it’s true. I enter every giveaway I find if it’s related in any way, shape or form to fabric, notions or just quilting in general.

50% Off First 3 Months Bluprint Subscription at mybluprint.com through 4/7/19.

In fact, I just won a giveaway! I totally forgot all about that I had entered it and yesterday I received an email stating I won a Braid template. Wow! I love the look of braid quilts. I can draw a braid quilt but actually trying to cut fabric for a braid quilt…. not so much. Now I CAN with the nifty, cool braid template. I am in a dither waiting for it to get here.

So here is your chance to win a cool notion. It’s something every sewist can use. It’s the perfect size and the color is reminds me of the inside of an Andes candy…. yes! it’s mint! The Sew Hot Iron Rest is a must for anyone who sews and really, just uses an iron for pressing clothes or whatever. I am always concerned of knocking my iron over or Monty dog knocking it over while playing. So this is a handy answer.

I use mine all of the time. In fact, I own a cheapo iron and I can keep it laying down on the mat without any damage to my ironing table or iron. Knowing that my iron is laying down and not in a position where it can tip over or fall off of the iron table gives me a little bit of peace. I don’t worry about Monty dog knocking it over when he’s playing.

Monty dog chewing on one of his many toys.

Now, it just so happens I have an extra one, all packaged up and needing a home to go to. Will YOUR home be the lucky home?

All you have to do to enter is click on the RaffleCopter link below, answer the questions, you don’t have to answer all of them, but as we all know, the more you answer the better chance of being a winner. I will also have a link on my LodgePole Quilting FaceBook page and on my LodgePole Quilting Instagam page. You will only be able to enter once, but you can enter it from one of three places.

The giveaway begins Sunday, March 31, 2019 (today) and ends Sunday, April 14, 2019 at midnight. The winner will be announced Wednesday April 10, 2019. This is giveaway is eligible for residents of the United States, only. You must be at least 18 years old to participate.

So, good luck! I want to send this handy notion to some one, it may as well be YOU!

No April Fool’s Here!

Can you believe it? March is almost over, finally. I don’t know about you, but it certainly roared in like a lion, but I’m hoping it will go out like a meek, little lamb. Did I say the snow is almost gone? That makes me happy. I’m planning my garden and starting my seeds for this year’s garden. Hubby is going to build me more boxes and we are expanding the garden so I have more room to move around in. Did I mention we are installing a new watering system for the garden? I can hardly wait.

Oh, I have an update on the Fat Quarter Square Union Square Quilt Along. It has been delayed. The new start date is April 12, 2019. Apparently the fabric for the quilt along has been delayed. I know I have been waiting for a while to share what I have made, but, it is what it is. I will keep you posted and let you know when you can join the quilt along. I am showing you a little tease with the following picture.

Union Square with gingham blocks

I did it! I finished the last two quilts I have chosen for the quilt show. The Moda Love Charm Quilt, which I hand quilted and the quilt I designed, Peaceful, are completed.

Moda Love Charm Quilt Wall Hanging

I used coordinating Aurifil 50 wt thread for hand quilting the Moda Love Charm quilt. It took me a bit of time to complete it. I also hand quilted some heart vines on the border. Those I drew on with a washable marker. I almost had a panic attack when I realized I forgot to test the marker on a piece of scrap fabric. Thankfully it did wash out. A little Dawn dish soap, gentle cycle and then air dry. It came out looking pretty good!

Now on to my Peaceful. I had designed this wall hanging last spring on graph paper with colored pencils. It was fun looking for the fabric on line to try to match my colored pencils. That included the border, which was drawn as a multi-stripe. On Fabric.com I found Kona Cotton Solids, Michael Miller Mer Mates Current stripe Tropical and the best is the backing, Kaffe Fassett Collective Brassica Pastels. Oh what fun it was when I received the fabric and got to see how close I got to my drawing.

PEACEFUL copyright protected (c) LodgePole Quilting 2018

I used my Accuquilt Go! Cutter and the Go! Qube Mix and Match 8 inch Block to cut most of the pieces for the quilt center. The border is a mitered border. I like how it came out. I had never made a mitered border before because I thought it would be difficult, but it really wasn’t.

Accuquilt Dynamic Promo

Aurifil was my thread of choice throughout the making of this quilt, for all of the piecing and the quilting. It makes for fine seams, not bulky like some other threads can be. The clear monofilament thread is a fine thread. I have tried a few other brands, but I am going to stick to Aurifil clear monofilament thread. It sews real nice and if you want to do detailed quilting but don’t want to take away from the fabric or pattern then I would use this thread.

Fat Quarter Shop Quilting Fabrics and Supplies

I wanted to do detailed quilting on this wall hanging but I didn’t want to distract from the fabric or the design. Here are a few pictures up close. I haven’t done a lot of free motion quilting, so excuse the mistakes.

I am fairly pleased with the overall look of the quilt and the detailed quilting. I did practice the various patterns over and over again with paper and pencil. Then I kept the drawings close by to refer to them as I was quilting. Having some muscle memory and a visual is helpful, especially quilting a new design. I have to thank Angela Walters for her great books on free motion quilting and her You Tube videos. I got all of my ideas from her.

One final thing I want to share with you. Starting Sunday, March 31, 2019, I am going to have a giveaway. No April Fool’s here! Now, all I am going to say about it is it’s an awesome item. And I know you are going to love it and want it for your own. So be sure you are on the email list to receive an update every time there’s a new post. That way you will know about the giveaway and everything else that’s happening here at LodgePole Quilting! I will post the link to the giveaway Sunday, March 31st, so stay tuned!

I plan on having another giveaway shortly after the one that starts March 31st, so be sure to sign up. I love giveaways. I always enter every one I find. I might not win anything, but it’s sure fun to try! I also love having giveaways. I love being able to send something to the winner. AND this spring there are going to be a few giveaways held here. That’s it for now. Check back Sunday for more news!
